I Get A New Momma But Not A Very Good One
April 4

It feels very strange being back home without My-Momma-Banjo, but I am still making the best of it.
My-Momma-Banjo’s best friend Momma Palida spent the night next door to me. It was good to have her near me in the dark. I could hear her breathing and I was not so lonesome for Miss Pat. In the night, two times, Miss Pat came with pretend milk for my orange bucket, and then she left me alone again. I begged very hard for her to stay with me, but she does not pay attention at night time except to put the pretend milk in my bucket and then go away. She just does not seem to care that I am lonesome for her company and want her to stay with me all the time.
Today after the round light came over the grass, Miss Pat brought me more pretend milk, and then after I was full, she turned me outside to run and play. It was very ‘or-fun’ to jump and buck and run as hard as I could. I loved it very much. I made a bad goof-up though. I was not paying attention to where I was running and I bumped into into Momma-Palida while she was eating her breakfast. Boy, was she cranky about that. So I said I-am-very-sorry-it-was-an-accident, and she frowned at me and then said it was ok but to watch out next time.
After a little time, Miss Pat put me back in my room and she got her her big white truck and drove away. I called to her to don’t leave me by myself, but Momma-Palida said, “Quit your yelling! I will be here with you today. Don’t worry. I will take care of you.” And she did. She stayed by my room door all morning long. And when Miss Pat came to feed me my lunch, she was still there.
Momma-Palida and Miss Pat had a talk for a bit, and I guess Momma-Palida explained that I was lonely, because Miss Pat let me come outside where Momma-Palida was. She said, “be nice.” I told her I am always nice. Momma-Palida said that Miss Pat wasn’t talking to me. I don’t know why she said that, because it was Miss Pat’s voice and I did too hear her say be nice.
Miss Pat stood and watched me and Momma-Palida a while, and then she got in the truck and drove away again. I called for her, but she was already gone. Momma-Palida said, “It will be ok. Miss Pat always comes back. You are safe with me.” And I was for the whole day and the whole night too.
And today is the first day that I did not even think about My-Momma-Banjo, but don’t say that I told that part.
